Is freelance income taxable in India?

Short answer: Yes. If you are resident in India, your freelance fees are taxable as income from a business or profession, whether your clients are in India or abroad. You pay tax on your profit, file an income tax return, and may need to pay advance tax during the year.

Freelance income is not salary, so no employer deducts tax for you every month. Instead, you are responsible for working out your profit, paying tax on it and filing a return.

How the profit is worked out

You can use one of two methods:

  • Regular method. Your profit is your receipts minus genuine business expenses, supported by books of account.
  • Presumptive method. If your work is a specified profession and your receipts are within the limits, you can declare 50% of receipts as profit under Section 58. Read our guide to presumptive taxation.

Foreign clients

For a resident of India, income from clients abroad is taxable in India just like income from Indian clients. Being paid in dollars or euros through a platform does not change that. Keep the payment advice or payout statements as proof of what you received.

TDS and advance tax

Some Indian clients deduct TDS from your fees. This TDS is credited against your final tax. If your tax for the year, after TDS, is Rs 10,000 or more, you need to pay advance tax in instalments during the year.
