Tax Year 2026-27

What records should a freelancer keep for tax?

Short answer: Keep copies of every invoice, bank statements showing payments received, proof of foreign payments, bills for business expenses, and your Annual Information Statement and Form 26AS. Good records make filing easier and support your figures if the tax department asks questions.

A simple checklist

  • Invoices you issue to each client, numbered in sequence.
  • Bank statements for the account where you receive fees.
  • Foreign payment proof: foreign inward remittance advice from your bank or payout statements from platforms such as PayPal, Wise, Payoneer, Upwork or Fiverr.
  • Expense bills for software subscriptions, equipment, internet, coworking space and work travel, especially if you use the regular method.
  • TDS records: Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement from the income tax portal, and any TDS certificates from clients.
  • Advance tax challans for each payment you make.
  • GST records, if you are registered: invoices, returns and your LUT.

Store digital copies in one place, organised by financial year. If you use the regular method of computing profit, you may also need to maintain formal books of account. A Chartered Accountant can tell you what applies to your situation.
